In a reaction against the religious dominance of Heliopolis, a second creation myth was developed at Hermopolis, capital of the 15th province of Upper Egypt. Similar to Heliopolitan tradition, chaos existed before the world was created. However, four god and goddess pairs represented four properties of this chaos. Nun and Naunet embodied primordial water; Heh and Hehet, infinite space; darkness was symbolized by Kek and Keket; and invisibility by Amun and Amunet. From these elements of chaos arose the primeval mound at Hermopolis on which an egg was deposited. From the egg emerged the sun god who then proceeded to organize the world.
